Epilepsy in Sandy Springs, GA

Epilepsy is a disorder that affects the central nervous system and makes brain activity become abnormal, which could cause seizures or periods of strange behavior. You may also sometimes get certain sensations and loss of awareness. Epilepsy can occur in anyone at any age and it’s important to understand what it is, what the symptoms are, and how it can be managed.

Dealing With Epilepsy

Epilepsy can occur differently in everyone and it’s important to be able to identify the symptoms of different seizures. A seizure could be just a few seconds of staring blankly or could be repeatedly twitching the arms and legs. It’s also important to note that seizures don’t always mean epilepsy. You may experience a seizure for other reasons, but if you have at least two seizures without a direct cause at least 24 hours apart, you need to talk to your doctor.

Epilepsy can either have no known cause or have a specific and direct cause. This condition could be genetic, caused by a head injury or brain abnormalities, be a prenatal injury, or be caused by certain infections.

Treatment may look different for each person, depending on the causes of epilepsy. Usually, your doctor may prescribe a medication to help stop seizures. You may need to work with your doctor to find the right dosage and find a medication that helps you continue to function as normal. In certain cases, epilepsy is difficult to control and may need surgery. Therapies can also be used as an alternative in certain situations.

If you think you may be dealing with epilepsy or you have a family history of epilepsy, it’s important to talk to your neurologist for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Contact your doctor at Gerald Silverboard, MD Specialist In Neurology by calling our Sandy Springs, GA office at (404) 255-2670!
